My all-time favorite vocalist and frontman. What a voice. Lead singer for the Small Faces and Humble Pie there was no note this remarkably small wee of a man couldn’t hit. He was all gusto, bravado, firestorm, soulstirring- no one will ever touch him. He turned down Jimmy Page for Led Zeppelin. He turned down Tony Iommi for Sabbath. He did his own thing up until the very day he died.

‎’Steve Marriott is one of those rare singers who, when you first hear him, instantly make you feel like a drought in your life has ended. He was his own meter, out there trying to go over the top with every number. Simply an amazing talent, tethered by nothing.’ — Bob Dylan

I do this list every year- I think since the days of Myspace back in 2006- as it gives me a chance to reflect on time that goes by ooohhhhh so quickly. You can see where we were, where we are and where we’re headed. Lofty expectations, a multitude of changes and a continued blessed path. Here’s to 2011…but I’m expecting a MUCH greater 2012!

25 Things about 2011:

1) DRINKING BUDDY OF THE YEAR?

Hmmm, well here’s a new one! Lauren Feldman. First time recipient. Lauren and I would hole up at Bergins, at Mollys, Japanese restaurants, rock & roll gigs…wherever there was alcohol served, Lauren was there.

2) LIFETIME SERVICE AWARD – LONGEST FRIEND(S)?

Nicki & Stacy! 30 years and counting! My Blake comes in at around 27 years. I also have a wonderful relationship with my first friend ever Jenny (Chovan) Bartlett. We met in kindergarten and our families still celebrate the holidays together! Reconnecting with grade school pal Ben Sullivan was cool, too!

3) NEWCOMER AWARD – FAVORITE NEW FRIEND?

Wow. Well, Facebook timeline said I added 189 new friends in 2011. Ha! But of all the favorite new people I would have to say Julia Herald gets top nod as she is a darling beauty who graciously opened up her home to me for her infamous Wednesday Night Potluck Jam’s. Crystal, Sita, Guy, Angie, Michael and all the gang are a wonderful addition. And I’m not sure when I met Adam Marsland- I think last year- but he continues to support my love of song and I am grateful for that. And I just adore Sara Aguilar! Seraphime, Nikki P, Jerry, Marcello, Jake, Latifa, my Expedition crew and any new member of Shurman also made my highlights list.

4) HIGH POINT OF THE YEAR?

August 17.

5) LOW POINT OF THE YEAR?

The comedown off of the high of August. Love is a drug, man and I only want uppers!

6) BEST HOLIDAY?

Palm Springs Memorial Day Weekend. Nothing fancy. Just me, my girls, Greg, 100 degree weather, frozen grapes, Keith Richard’s autobiography and white wine. Bliss. Phoenix was fun, too.

7) SONG FOR 2010?

The three songs that stand out are Lana Del Rey’s “Blue Jeans”, Jessica Lea Mayfield’s “Our Hearts Our Wrong” and Washed Out’s “Amor Fati”. I guess I was in a loungey spaced out mood.

 BEST CONCERT?

Ladies and Gentlemen…THE BUFFALO SPRINGFIELD! The second time around with the same ole gals from the first concert the year previous. Tita, Amber & Tracy. Tita actually bought my ticket for me while I was in Morocco knowing full well that I would be the first in line. Such an experience! Wanda Jackson, Peter Frampton & Chris Robinson Brotherhood also gave great shows.

9) BEST FESTIVAL?

I’m not sure I actually even went to a festival this year! No Coachella! No Stagecoach! No SXSW! Maybe my festival days are done.

10) BEST BIRTHDAY?

My Mom’s 85th! First of all, it was my Mom’s 85th! And that’s enough to celebrate! But it was a great party with close family & friends. AMAZING barbeque from Max City BBQ and non-stop bourbon. How could you go wrong?!

11) BEST WEDDING?

Nikki Petersen’s & Nicole Gordon’s! Although I was unable to attend either wedding, I’m so happy for these happy couples!

12) FAVORITE OUT OF TOWN EVENT?

MOROCCO! I was there for one month for work but what an amazing trip it was! We saw every region of that country- beautiful terrain, beautiful people. I am so grateful for the experience!

13) BIGGEST REGRET

That I didn’t travel more. (GOD, this is a recurring theme! I need a vacation!)

14) BEST NIGHT OUT?

August 17. Best night out usually is followed up by best night in.

15) WORST NIGHT OUT?

I was in a Glass Case of Emotion most all of September. I tried to gloss it up and doll out but to no avail. Heartbreak ain’t easy but it certainly gets the songwriting to flow.

16) WHO DID YOU SPEND V-DAY WITH?

Sadly, I think I was with Audrina Patridge and our crew shooting her TV show in Vegas? I don’t remember.

17) BEST RELATIONSHIP?

My Mom, my girlfriends, my niece.

18) WORST RELATIONSHIP?

My relationship with the gym. Although we made up this year- promised to start seeing more of eachother.

19) FIRST GIG OF THE YEAR?

Photos say it was Andy Clockwise at the El Rey.

20) LAST GIG OF THE YEAR?

Old Californio at The Satellite. Plus, I HAD to say that- Levi has had me in house arrest ever since Wednesday just so this status would remain.

21) BEST DECISION IN ’11?

To make what I want happen, happen.

22) WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR NEXT YEAR?

Husband, house, baby. Maybe not all three at once…who knows. Life is strange.

23) MOST STUPID IDEA WHEN DRUNK?

I don’t drink enough to get stupid anymore. I can do that on my own and sober, thank you very much.

24) MOST LOYAL FRIEND?

My Mom- and all my girls.

25) BIGGEST CHANGE OF THE YEAR?

Giving up the idea that I can’t possibly write a song. This has been a loooong, slowwwwww journey- but I can do it!

25) BIGGEST CHANGE OF THE YEAR?

The whole year was rattling the chains from last year- love lost/gained, friendships deepened/lost. I stayed home and in a lot. I kept to myself, didn’t really reach out and dropped the stuff (and the people) that weren’t working. Realizing I have to do a lot of work to make the changes I want to see to get to where I want to be. This was my “hibernation” year. I think I’m ready to get out there again.

I had the pleasure (and the honor) last year of laying down my bluesy Christmas tune with true pros. I wrote this in ten minutes with my dear friend Ted Russell Kamp and we went down to jam with some good ole friends at one of my favorite studios on earth Compound Studio. Master guitarist Marc Ford, drummer Anthony Arvizu and organist Mike Malone joined Ted and myself as we created a sultry (sad) yet saucy Christmas tune! Sure to be a classic on the ole victrola.

I am over the moon that the Small Faces is finally getting their due in the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. It goes without saying that the R&R HOF nominees are on an endless list that is controversial, agonizing, painful and at the very least subjective. Without fail there will be some amazing rock band passed over by a mediocre pop diva and everyone scratches their head and asks “HOW?” and “WHY?!” And it’s for this reason, as well as most Grammy nominations, which leaves a bitter taste in most music lover’s mouths.

But no one will question or doubt why the Small Faces have been invited. Ronnie Lane, Ian McLagan, Kenney Jones and superstar singer Steve Marriott created a sound that was explosive and fierce. It mod, pop, rock, psychedelic and raw. All in all- rock and roll!

Please shop local and support your local Mom + Pops businesses around your neighborhood. Here are a few of my favorite stores around town!

MUSH 5527 Hollywood Blvd

My absolute favorite go-to store for gifts, lamps, artwork, jewelry, home decor. Michelle has amazing unique treasures and she also caters to the movie set designer crowd. Sooooo much to look at!

http://www.m-u-s-h.com/

KELLY GREEN HOME 2149 W. Sunset Blvd. LA CA 90026 213.383.0488

Thank you all so much for your love and support and great listening skills! My hour at The Sound 100.3 was so much fun and I’m totally hooked on radio! I don’t care where you put me behind a mic, just put me behind a mic!

Here’s the full playlist:

Rock and Roll Woman – Buffalo Springfield

This is one of my favorite songs of ALL time- what I would consider my anthem! This song is so dreamy and ethereal. From the 12 string to Stills’ sexy vocals it’s a fast-paced groovy song which takes you a cosmic ride. This song was written for Grace Slick but it could have been written about any one of my foxy girlfriends. I saw Buffalo Springfield reunite last year at the Bridge School Benefit and had tears of joy streaming down my face as they rocked into this one.

Can’t You Hear Me Knocking – The Rolling Stones

Everyone’s favorite guitar riff of all time always goes to Keef’s “Satisfaction” lick which is, indeed, the gold standard, but this opening riff is so gritty, sooooo bluesy and just plain dirty. The fact that Mick sings the same melody over the riff just packs a double wollop. As I said in the show this reminds me of my little house in Hollywood where the door opens and closes with amazing musicians bringing in instrument after instrument. This is for all you later nighters who stay til 7 am and dance in the hallway to Boz Scaggs on vinyl.

Gimme Shelter – Merry Clayton

Now, The Stones version of “Gimme Shelter” is also one of my favorite songs of all time it’s the background vocals which make the song, which are really not background vocals at all. Merry Clayton makes this HER song- which is why it was interesting when I stumbled across this version that she did for her own album. She comes ROOOOOARING out of the gate and doesn’t let up. The exact intensity you want when you are screaming for shelter. Epic track.

Tin Soldier – The Small Faces

Steve Marriott is hands down my favorite male vocalist ever and I love, love, love the Small Faces. This song, as I stated on the show, just SCREAMS rock and roll! The very 60′s keys intro, the kickin’ drums, the rock bass, the push and pull is what rock & roll is all about. It’s a sweet song, a love song if you will, but then Marriott just takes it up an octave and brings it to an almost gospel vibe in the bridge and last chorus. This song is nuts. And features PP Arnold. What’s NOT to love?!

Angel – Rod Stewart

I love this sweet song. It certainly has it’s own groovy vibe when Hendrix sings it but I love when an artist can cover a tune and still make it their own. I think Rod’s dirty raspy voice perfected this song.

I Don’t Know Why I Love You – Stevie Wonder

This song just gives me goosebumps! Such a good, aching, longing love song. The antagonist of the storyline certainly isn’t worth a song this good but love (true passion or deep despair) can make a man write really great songs, now can’t it?! Stevie was 18 when he released this song and as I said in the show I found it most interesting that he wrote this with his mother Lula Mae Hardaway!

Wiser Time – The Black Crowes

This is a seven minute jam and I love it. So groovy. I think what I love the most is the two brothers singing this lazy southern harmony throughout every verse. I also love the pedal steel and the laid back float-down-a-river vibe. A happy summer song. My buddy Marc Ford rocked lead guitar on this track for the album “Amorica” and if Jack Joseph Puig produced it most likely these cats were at Ocean Way, Studio A.

Tangerine – Led Zeppelin

Tangerine! Such a sweet, winsome song. Heartbreak, loss, reflection and tenderness. This came to me in life twice: once as a California baby of the 70′s rolling around the grass, jumping over sprinklers and listening to my brother’s records, the ultimate California idyllic childhood. The other as an adult, when you come to an age where you hear the song differently. You hear the words and you can now relate to the pain.

Thinking how it used to be
Does she still remember times like these
To think of us again?
And I do.

Medley- The Beatles

The Beatles, to me, have always been and will always be the best band of all time. I can’t say anything that hasn’t been said before but just know they are in the fabric of my being. I literally could not choose just one song which is why I went with this ten minute opus.

Days- The Kinks

Ah, the Kinks! I love the Kinks! And I love this sweet song. Really it is a love letter to friends, family, loved ones. I want this one played at my funeral. Just play my slide shows, kiss each other and play this song! I live a magical life and I’m so glad you’re in it!

Thank you for the days,
Those endless days, those sacred days you gave me.
I’m thinking of the days,
I won’t forget a single day, believe me.

I bless the light,
I bless the light that lights on you believe me.
And though you’re gone,
You’re with me every single day, believe me.
